Have you ever wondered why you and your sibling who grew up in almost the same environment, have such different goals in life?

What makes each one of us choose a particular kind of goal for ourselves?

Although there are several factors that affect our goal-setting, an important one that we don’t discuss much is personality.

A study by UC Davis on 500 students found that “in many ways, one’s personality shapes the types of life goals that are valued, and as a result of pursuing those goals, personality changes.”

That is why your goals are so different from others. You are unique and have your own worldviews and preferences, which sets apart your desires from yourself and life. That’s why, to set your goals, it can be quite useful to understand your personality first. For example, are you an agreeable person? Do you think you are an introvert? Or do you love meeting new people at work?

If you are an introvert in sales, you might feel drained at the end of the day. Or if you are an extrovert with a remote job, you could feel unsettled sitting alone at home all day.

That’s why self-awareness is often the first step towards setting the right goals for ourselves. Harnessing our strengths and being cognizant of our needs goes a long way in ensuring that we enjoy what we do.

A Type-A personality who’s assertive, outgoing, and a go-getter might work better with performance-driven goals. They like a competitive environment and often use a gamification setup to feel rewarded. Type-B is mostly driven by their intrinsic motivation and feels stressed in a highly competitive environment.

It is also important that you note that your personality type also affects the relationships you have at your workplace. This might seem obvious, but if you aren’t aware of why you don’t get along with certain people, you might end up making the wrong hiring choices.

That’s why I have introduced a new program where I will be talking about the DISC assessment that is widely used for understanding ourselves and our relationships in and outside the workplace. If you are an employee or a business leader, you’ll find this greatly improves the quality of your work life.
