Throughout my years as a Business Leader and Success Coach, I have read many books on becoming a better leader. One of which is a book by Mac Anderson, which I believe is greatly undervalued as its insights are outstanding.
You Can’t Send a Duck to Eagle School: And Other Simple Truths of Leadership is a short book – it is just 128 pages. But it is packed with lessons that cover how to hire better people, become a better leader, get more done in less time, and ignite your team to perform to their highest potential.
One particular lesson that stuck out was the following:
“Far too many companies are focused on the product and not the experience. We need to replace our brain with our heart because that’s often how people make decisions. Studies have proven that the essential difference between emotion and reason is that emotion leads to action and reason leads to conclusions.”
This reminded me of Steve Jobs and how Apple focused heavily on understanding what the customer felt while using their products. I’ve spoken in depth about Steve Jobs in another blog, you can read it here.
In the book, Anderson shares his best lessons learned from more than forty years of leadership. And trust me, it’s a gold mine for those who are starting out or want to revamp their business. There is less ‘rah-rah’ motivation and more actual lessons that are worth implementing.
The stuff written in there is quite obvious when you first read it. Yes, you can’t send a duck to an eagle school. But place the lesson in the context of an organization, and you’ll realize the common hiring mistakes that people make.
It’s the “obvious” that often eludes us and that’s why it’s good to have a book with simple truths.
So, if you are a manager or an entrepreneur, take some time out this weekend and read the book. You’ll definitely keep coming back to it for reference again and again.
