Why You Keep Going Back to Your Old Habits

Many ambitious people say that they have their eye on the “big picture”, which is great because it helps us know what our purpose is and where we are going in life. But while running towards the bigger picture has its benefits, you need to ask yourself if you are losing sight of the details.
If you want to be “successful”, ask yourself the following: What does success look like to me? What do my daily actions and routine need to look like? What paradigms do I need to shift right now?
People need to be looking at the small stuff because the big picture is made up of the small stuff.
So, while you may have a grand dream, it’s not going to come true unless you have a plan. What do you need to do every day in order to get to where you want to go? What habits or paradigms do you need to change?
Because more often than not, it’s not the big picture that causes trouble, it’s actually the little details that we ignored.
If you’ve worked in any manufacturing or production unit, you’d know how important every little component of a system is. All those small parts make up a well-running machine.
The big picture will never be a masterpiece if you ignore the small brushstrokes.
Which one are you?
Some people tend to look at the big picture and some choose to focus on the smaller details. The former tends to get lost in the grand scheme of things, daydreaming of what could be and neglecting the details. The latter tends to get stuck overanalyzing and may drown in the details while losing sight of the bigger purpose.
The ideal approach is to have a good mix of both.
So how do you balance the two?
Big-picture thinking enables you to let go of old ideas and beliefs and allows you to have a visionary approach towards your work. But being detail-oriented allows you to be focused on the here and now.
Let the big picture chart your course. After that, reaching the destination will require day-to-day actions, realigning your behavior, consistency, and discipline. Over time, this attention to detail will add up to the big picture that you’ve been dreaming of.
